We try to answer your questions

Below are some of the questions our parents frequantly ask. We will discuss these as well as many more during yor 5-week course.

What is baby massage?

Baby massage is the practice of using gentle touch and pressure to stimulate the skin and muscles of a baby. It can be done with or without oil, and there are many different techniques that can be used. Some common techniques include stroking, kneading, and tapping.

When can I start massaging my baby?

You can start massaging your baby as soon as they are born. However, it is important to wait until your baby is calm and relaxed before you begin. If your baby is fussy or crying, it is best to wait until they have calmed down.

What kind of oil should I use for baby massage?

Any type of unscented oil can be used for baby massage. Some popular choices include organic coconut oil and grapeseed oil. It is important to avoid using oils that contain essential oils, as these can be irritating to a baby's skin.

How long should a baby massage session last?

Your baby will determine how long he or she wants to be massaged for. There is no set time. If your baby starts to get fussy, it is best to end the massage early.

How often should I massage my baby?

You can massage your baby as often as you like. However, it is a good idea to start with short massages and gradually increase the length of time as your baby gets used to it.

Tips for making baby massage more enjoyable?

  • Choose a quiet and comfortable place. The room should be warm and free from distractions.
  • Use a light touch. Use gentle, smooth strokes to massage your baby's skin.
  • Talk to your baby. Talk to your baby in a soothing voice as you massage them.
  • Make it a bonding experience. Baby massage is a great way to connect with your baby and help them feel relaxed and loved.

What should I avoid during a baby massage?

  • Massaging a baby who is not feeling well. If your baby is sick, it is best to wait until they are feeling better before giving them a massage.
  • Massaging a baby who is crying or upset. If your baby is crying or upset, it is best to wait until they are calm before giving them a massage.
  • Using too much pressure can be uncomfortable or even painful for your baby.
  • Massaging the belly button area. The belly button area is a sensitive area for babies. It is best to avoid massaging this area.
  • Using essential oils. Essential oils can be harmful to babies. It is best to avoid using essential oils when massaging a baby.

Baby massage is all about trust. No one knows your baby better. The best gift you can give your baby is your own loving hands.

This love story for midwifery began when I first witnessed new life enter the world as a student nurse. When my eyes were filled with tears of joy for someone that I had just met and my heart melted when the baby gave its first breath and cried unapologetically. I smiled when the father fell onto his knees and kissed his new born son for the first time on the forehead. I joined the mother when she exhaled in relief when the most severe abdominal pain she had ever experienced came to an end. I felt extremely honoured to share in this joy and be the first to say “Congratulations mom and dad!”
